Contradiction clarified : Was Jesus in Egypt?
Skeptic's Annotated Bible on Matthew2:14 , "He took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:"
According to Matthew, Mary, and the baby Jesus left for Egypt soon after Jesus' birth, yet Luke (2:39) says they
went directly to Nazareth.
Matthew 2:13 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. 2:14 When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:
Luke in his Gospel does not record this event . So the skeptics think that either , Matthew or Luke is wrong . But the fact is Luke chose not to include this incident in his narrative. The Gospels do not claim to give all the information about Jesus.
1 Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled[a] among us, 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. 3 With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.
The aim of writing the Gospel of Luke is to help theophilus to know for certain that the Gospel as taught by the apostles and the Jesus whom they preached as the saviour of the world. With this aim he writes an orderly account, but not an exhaustive account which includes all details.
John proclaimed, “Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book, but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name” (20:30-31, emp. added). In truth, “there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written”
Again John claims the same think , he is not exhaustive but only to the point . The point to showing evidences and his giving eye witness testimony of the Lord Jesus .
Secondly ,
"Luke simply omitted Joseph, Mary, and Jesus’ trip to Egypt, which sequentially could be placed between Luke 2:38 and 2:39. Bible writers frequently moved from one subject to the next without intending to give every action that took place during a particular time or the exact order in which something was done or taught"
